We've been busy in the art room over the first few weeks of school, so I thought I'd give an update of what we've been up to. This semester, I have 4 classes at the high school building: Art 8, Art 6 and two sections of Intro to Art (freshmen). All students started the year by creating a digital portfolio, sketchbook, and "gem" to add to a bulletin board. Next, all classes reviewed Color Theory basics, and the Elements of Art to use in future projects. To use the color theory skills we reviewed, all classes completed a Teacher Collaborative Painting. I was inspired by the AMAZING art teacher extraordinaire, Cassie Stephens for this idea. The example here was done for an elementary school in general. I thought it would be fun to create one of these for the staff in the 6th-12th grade building. Students were broken up into small groups, staff members were chosen, and they started working away! I LOVED this project and it was a great way to start off the year. Students were required to list the staff member's name, as well as what subject they teach or their job at our school. After the black letters were painted, color was added to fill all of the spaces. After color was added the final step was to embellish with designs/illustrations. The tricky part was the colors chosen had to be one of the color schemes we reviewed - complementary, analogous, monochromatic, etc. After all small details were complete, white highlight was the final step to make the letters stand out. The highlight of the whole project was having each group deliver their finished product to the staff member, and hearing about the reactions. I'm happy to have hopefully made someone's day, and have a lesson about creating something for someone else. Art 8 Students with their final projects! Art 6 Groups Click on the images below to see enlarge the photos of the process of creating these masterpieces! After delivering the paintings today, all classes focused on individual work. Art 8To see more on this project (and final results) CLICK HERE. Intro to ArtMy 9th grade students are creating a 1-Point Perspective Collage. This project is a great overall review of the Elements and Principles of Art using a variety of media in the process. After the collage portion is complete, students will add the perspective portion on top of the magazine to give the illusion of depth. Finished examples can be seen below. Check out more completed Intro to Art projects HERE. Art 6Last, but not least, my Art 6 students are covering the elements of art in detail for the first time. I chose this Mixed Media project as an overview of all the elements: line, color, shape/form, space, value and texture. Final results of this Art 6 Mixed Media project can be found HERE.

Week 2 flew by! Our new semester schedule featuring a 6 hour day makes it seem like each day moves very quickly. I was nervous about 60 minute classes (compared to having 70+ minute classes for the last 5 years), but now I love them! I find my classes to use their time well, and I like the fast-paced environment. It's been a busy week, but I am happy with how everything has been going. Here is a little summary of what we've been up to! All of my classes 7th-12th grade are creating digital portfolios this year using Google Slides. Examples of their title pages can be seen below. Each time a student finishes a project, they will be posting a photo of it to their portfolio, and writing a corresponding artist statement. Art 7 is finishing up School Spirit Posters in small groups. Their designs must show all 6 Elements of Art in the final product. Most groups will finish on Monday, and we will have a group critique to follow. You can see progress on their work by clicking on the images below. Art 8 is finishing up Camouflage Paintings in small groups showing all the Elements of Art, as well as 2 Principles of Art (Emphasis and Pattern). This project was inspired by Guido Daniele, an artist famous for hand painting. The challenge was to incorporate 2 hidden hands in their final piece. Two groups have finished, and their images are pictured below (click to enlarge). My Drawing/Painting class is finishing up one of my favorite projects - Geometric Silhouettes. After reviewing color theory, they jumped right in to this project and blew me away. Some students finished on Friday, but most will finish Monday or Tuesday of this week. I cannot wait to post the results! Last, but not least, my Intro to Art class is working on Mixed Media Self-Portraits. this project combines portrait drawing, magazine collage as a color theory review, and a little free choice typography addition. More pictures to come soon! This week also included the start of Homecoming preparation. Class meetings were held on Friday to vote for Homecoming court and to sign up for Powder Puff Games Sign-ups are posted in the cafeteria! Homecoming week will start on Monday, October 2nd, with the game the following Friday (6th) and the dance on Saturday (7th). The Powder Puff Football game will take place on Friday afternoon for the girls. The NHS-sponsored Powder Puff Volleyball game will take on Wednesday afternoon for the boys. There will also be a Lightning Basketball Challenge in between the Powder Puff Volleyball games. A National Honor Society update can be found HERE. Thanks for viewing my website! Please check back for more updates soon!
My Mixed Media class completed a Japanese Notan project. Notan is a Japanese word meaning the balance between dark and light. The art is created through a paper-cutting process, and is a prime example of positive and negative space. Prior to working solo, students worked in a groups to practice the paper cutting process. Each small group of 4 students had 10 minutes to create a Notan. The results were then photographed and voted on by my two Intro to Art classes. The winning design was #5 pictured below. After practicing, students created their individual projects. The colorful background was made by completing a saran wrap watercolor painting technique. After the background dried overnight, a Notan was created with black construction paper. The final results! :) I love the colors and the creativity! Mixed Media students (Juniors) also completed a name design project for their first assignment. Check back for more updates through the Trimester! Students in my Intro to Art classes completed their Analogous Circle projects. Analogous colors are hues that are neighboring on the color wheel. The results look great hung up in the Art room! Up next, they are working on a Mixed Media Self-Portrait that is DUE TODAY! After those projects are turned in, we are reviewing our Elements and Principles of Art! Check back soon! Sometimes you have a class that you look forward to every. single. day. That was my 3rd hour Mixed Media class this trimester. Our last day was full of edible art, gnome narrative presentations, selfies, and some silly awards, which they wore for the remainder of the day like badges. :) :) :) I hope everyone has a wonderful summer! I will miss you! Thank you for being such a joy to teach! Silly Awards

I am so excited to see what inventive ideas students come up with... listening to their brainstorming in groups today was definitely entertaining. Final projects will be posted at the end of next week - check back soon! There are endless options with this project. Here are just a few ideas. Just because the days are dwindling down doesn't mean we stop working!
Here is my fabulous Mixed Media class working away on their Recycled Magazine project! :)
